Events & Workshops

The process of developing this installation was, in some ways, as important as the final result.

These boxes contain a few clues as to the journey that brought these works into the spotlight.

Spending time at HART, taking in the atmosphere, colour choices and architectural details, both

large and small scale, allowed me to make carefully informed material choices for the works.

Getting lost in Shakespeare’s plays helped me to reconnect with just how much his style of dialogue still shapes our use of the English language today. Coupled with comparing different typesetting techniques and fonts from the history of letterpress, a looser approach to syntax materialised – one that would require the audience to draw their own connections.

Researching information available about The Curtain Theatre also literally helped shape decisions around form. The theatre was actually rectangular in shape and this, as well as wanting to provide a contrast to some of the more organic shapes in HART’s design, inspired my use of multiple rectangular shapes across the installation.

There is something fascinating about recalling the 2D page, the frame that holds and contains a word, a sentence or a story until it is able to escape into the 3D world by connecting with the reader. The possible, the dreamt, the imaginary, all emerging and shifting into the real, the actualised, the alive.

The ‘Chess’ works in the lobby each have quotes from the plays stamped into the copper tiles I’d love to know which, if any, you connect with.

Similarly, which of the ‘Balcony’ tiles speaks to you the most? Do you have a favourite? Have you drawn the ‘Curtain’ downstairs? Or assembled your own alchemical poem from our live ‘Archive’?

Have you seen the beautiful film created by Esme Harvey-Otway for my poem ‘Thinking Makes It So’?

At the heart of this installation is the idea of relationship and connection. This imagined spectacle would not have become reality without the incredible kindness and forward thinking mindset of everyone on team HART that has been involved in making this happen.

There are many live events also planned here between the 13th and the 22nd  I hope to meet you in person at one of them soon!

With gratitude,

/Rosie Reed Gold
